In 2006 maakte Frans Bromet de documentaire "Het water komt'. Bromet woont in Ilpendam, een dorp in de gemeente Waterland dat precies op 0 meter NAP ligt.
Naar aanleiding van berichten over een dreigende zeespiegelstijging vraagt Bromet af of het niet beter is nu al Ilpendam te verlaten en met de hele familie ergens anders te gaan wonen en werken. Nú kunnen ze de waardevermindering van hun panden in Ilpendam door de dreiging van het water nog voor zijn.
In de documentaire gaat Frans met zijn camera op pad om zoveel mogelijk informatie te verzamelen bij wetenschappers, het waterschap en andere deskundigen. De documentaire laat zien hoe de tegenstrijdige geluiden het niet makkelijk voor de familie om gezamenlijk een beslissing te nemen.

In 2006 film maker Frans Bromet made the documentary "Het water komt" ("The water is coming"). Bromet lives in Ilpendam, a village in the municipality Waterland, at exactly 0 meter NAP (=Normaal Amsterdam Peil; approximate mean sea level at Amsterdam. Because of reports of a threatening sea level rise Bromet wonders if it wouldn't be better to leave Ilpendam and to go and work elsewhere with the whole family. At this moment in time it is still possible to anticipate the expected value reduction of their real estate in Ilpendam.
In the documentary Frans travels with his camera to get as much information as possible from scientists, Dutch water boards and other experts. The documentary shows how difficult it is for the family to take a common decision with all the contradicting opinions.

Deze website gaat uitsluitend over hoe we omgaan met een zeewaterspiegelstijging van 6 meter. We gaan ons niet bezig houden met welles/nietes discussies over klimaatverandering, of die door de mens veroorzaakt wordt, etcetera. Niet dat deze discussies onbelangrijk zijn, maar ze worden al volop gevoerd op andere plekken.

De website bestaat uit een blog en een forum. De blog posts worden geschreven door een beperkt aantal mensen. Als u een artikel wilt plaatsen, neem dan via email contact met ons op. Iedereen kan op blog posts reageren.
Op het forum kan iedereen reageren of een discussie starten. Het forum wordt gemodereerd (dat wil zeggen dat berichten bekeken worden, en dat zij eventueel gesloten of verwijderd kunnen worden) om er voor te zorgen dat we geconcentreerd blijven op de onderzoeksvraag.

De site is zoveel mogelijk tweetalig. U kunt in het Nederlands en het Engels reageren. Als u beide talen machtig bent, schrijf dan a.u.b. in beide, waarbij u de Engelse tekst schuingedrukt maakt.

Voor deelname aan het forum is registratie met uw email adres verplicht. Uw email adres wordt niet aan derden doorgegeven of verkocht, en u ontvangt van ons alleen email met:

• de bevestiging van uw registratie;
• belangrijk nieuws;
• kennisgevingen van antwoorden op uw forumbijdragen (als u dat zo instelt).

Site structure and rules

This website deals only with the question how we are going to deal with a sea level rise of 6 meters. We are not going to occupy ourselves with yes or no arguments about climate change, whether this is caused by human influences, etcetera. Not that these discussions are unimportant, but they already happen in a lot of other places.

The website consist of a blog and a forum. The blog posts are written by a limited number of people. If you want to write an article, contact us via email. Everyone can comment on the blog post.
In the forum everyone can react or start a discussion. The forum is moderated (meaning that messages are monitored, and that they could be closed or removed) to make sure that we keep focused on the investigation.

The site is bilingual as much as possible. You can write in Dutch or English. If you master both  languages, please write in both, writing the English texts in italics.

For participation in the forum we require registration with your email address. These email addresses will not be given or sold to third parties, and from us you will only receive emails about:

• registration confirmation
• important news/notices;
• notifications of answers to your forum contributions (if you have set that up).

The forum interface is in English, because it is easier for Dutch people to read English than the other way around. English explanations about how the forum works are entered into the category titled About the forum.

Het belangrijkste wat u kunt doen is meedenken over de twee scenario’s:

• Wat kunnen we doen als we besluiten Nederland te ‘verdedigen’ tegen het water?
• Wat is er nodig als we besluiten (een deel van) Nederland te laten overstromen, de mensen te verhuizen en alle activiteiten te verplaatsen?

U kunt dit doen door:

• bijlagen te schrijven voor het blog;
• commentaar te leveren op blog posts;
• deel te nemen aan de discussies in het forum;
• het bestaan van dit onderzoek en deze website zo breed mogelijk bekend te maken: twitter, schrijf een blog post, start een discussie op sociale netwerken, etc.
• mensen vragen die een bijdrage kunnen leveren;
• er over te praten in uw omgeving (en vooral ook op uw werk: het onderzoek vraagt bijdragen van politici, economen, ingenieurs, sociologen enzovoort);
• uw ideeën met ons te delen;
• etc.

We zoeken alle mensen die een constructieve bijdrage leveren aan dit onderzoek. 

The main thing you can do is think with us about two scenarios:

• What can we do if we decide to ‘defend’ the Netherlands against the water?
• What would be required if we decide to let (part of) the Netherlands be inundated, move the people and all activities?

You can do this by:

• writing contributions for the blog;
• commenting on the blog posts;
• taking part in the discussions in the forum
• making this inquiry and this website known as much as possible: twitter, write a blog post, start a discussion on social networks, etc.
• asking people who can make a contribution
• talking about it with the people you know (and especially at work: the investigation required contributions from politicians, economists, engineers, sociologists etcetera)

Deze website is bedoeld als een publiek onderzoek naar wat we kunnen doen als het ijs op Groenland (of West-Antarctica) smelt en we geconfonteerd worden met een stijging van de zeewaterspiegel van ongeveer 6 meter.
We hebben in feite twee keuzes: blijven of vertrekken.
Beide opties hebben hun voorbereidingen nodig.

Als we er over praten reageren mensen heel verschillend:

• men veronderstelt dat er wel aan gewerkt zal worden (door de regering?);
• men vraagt zich af of er überhaupt wel iets aan te doen is;
• men denkt dat we nog wel even tijd hebben om maatregelen te nemen;
• men ontkent dat het ooit zo ver zal komen;
• enzovoort.

De intentie van deze website is deze gesprekken publiekelijk te voeren.

*Als* de zeespiegel 6 meter stijgt wat doen we dan?
Blijven we en zoeken we de oplossing in technische maatregelen, òf gaan we massaal verhuizen?
Beide keuzes hebben verregaande gevolgen op technisch, economisch, sociaal, politiek en emotioneel gebied.
Door het gesprek nu te starten zijn we voorbereid als het zover komt. Misschien niet omdat er dan kant-en-klaar plannen liggen, maar wel omdat een groot aantal mensen zich al met de vraag heeft bezig gehouden en er een hoop zaken onderzocht zijn.

Uiteraard zal een zeespiegelstijging niet alleen invloed hebben op Nederland. Wat wij hier bespreken voor Nederland kunnen andere landen ook gebruiken, en wij kunnen leren van initiatieven en research elders in de wereld. Voorzover dat relevant is vermelden we daarom ook buitenlands nieuws.
In verband hiermee is de website tweetalig: Nederlands om een zo groot mogelijk groep Nederlanders de gelegenheid te geven aan het gesprek deel te nemen, Engels om gegevens uit te kunnen wisselen met mensen wereldwijd.

Why this website?

This website is meant to be a public inquiry into what we can do if the Greenland ice caps (or the Western Antarctic ice sheets) melt and we are confronted with a sea level rise of appoximately 6 meters.
Basically, we would have two options: move or stay.
Both options need their preparation.

When we talk with people about this they react very differently:

• people assume that somebody is working on it (the government?);
• people wonder if anything can be done about it;
• people think we have plenty of time to take measures;
• people deny that this will ever take place;
• etcetera.

The intention of this web site is to have these discussions publicly.

*If* the sea level rises 6 meters, what are we going to do?
Do we stay and do we look for technical solutions, or are we going to move on a large scale?
Both choices have far reaching technical, economical, socila, political, and emotional consequences.
By starting the discussion now we are prepared if it ever comes this far. Maybe not because we have ready-to-use plans, but because a lot of people have dealt with the question and issues have been investigated.

Naturally a sea level rise will not only influence the Netherlands. What we discuss here for the Netherlands may also benefit other countries, and we can learn from initiatives and research elsewhere in the world. We therefore also mention news from abroad if that is relevant.
Because of this the website is bilingual: Dutch in order to reach as large a group of Dutch people as possible, English in order to exchange information with people all over the world.
